Is Turmeric Good for Dogs?
Here at Lord Jameson, we only use high-quality, all-natural, delicious ingredients in our organic dog treats! Some of those ingredients include coconuts, peanut butter, blueberries, strawberries, turmeric, etc. We've previously discussed the benefits of both coconuts and sweet potatoes, so now it's time for us to share the benefits of the wonderful plant / spice, turmeric! Before we get into the details, let's talk a little bit about the plant.
Turmeric is a plant in the ginger family that's native to Southeast Asia. It's a very powerful anti-inflammatory superfood that we've actually included in some of our treats... One of the major components of turmeric is curcumin. Fun fact - curcumin is what gives turmeric that beautiful yellow / orange color! The underground stem of turmeric - aka the rhizome - is typically used as a culinary spice and is also used in traditional medicine.
In today's day and age, you'll find turmeric in a lot of dietary supplements... The dietary supplements include dried rhizome from the turmeric plant! Turmeric has been known to help conditions such as allergies, arthritis, digestive disorders, respiratory infections, liver disease, and much more.
As we mentioned, turmeric is also a super popular spice... It's typically used in curries and different types of mustards. Humans are able to enjoy this spice in their foods, and thankfully, turmeric is safe for dogs, too! Amazingly, there are multiple health benefits of turmeric for dogs... However, like many other ingredients, turmeric should only be given in moderation. Small dogs should only stick to having around 1/4 teaspoon a day, medium dogs should aim to have around 1/2 teaspoon a day, and larger dogs should have around 3/4 teaspoon a day.
Now, without any further ado, let's discuss why turmeric is good for dogs!
3 Health Benefits of Turmeric for Dogs
1. It has anti-inflammatory properties which can help to relieve pain
As we mentioned, Turmeric is a very powerful anti-inflammatory superfood. If your dog suffers from any trauma, toxins, or infections, they may experience inflammation. Unfortunately, inflammation can lead to extreme stiffness and pain - typically occurring in your dog's joints. This can be very uncomfortable for your dog to deal with. If your dog suffers from long-term inflammation, it can even negatively affect their overall health. Some conditions that are caused by inflammation are kidney disease, arthritis, dental disease, and allergies. No matter what they're going through, it's important to try to relieve your dog's inflammation in any way that you can.
Thankfully, turmeric's anti-inflammatory properties can help to relieve the pain that your dog is experiencing. The anti-inflammatory properties also help to decrease any swelling or redness and even reduce blood vessel dilation. By decreasing the inflammation, your dog will feel so much more comfortable, and overall, they'll be healthier!
2. It can improve your dog's heart and liver health
The curcumin in turmeric is absolutely amazing! Turmeric has been known to help lower LDL cholesterol to decrease any blood clots in your dog's heart. If your dog suffers from congestive heart failure, then adding turmeric into their diet can seriously help to improve their overall heart health. Turmeric is also great at breaking down fats and removing waste to help promote a healthier liver. It's great for dogs of all ages - especially senior dogs with hearts and livers that aren't as strong as they used to be.
So, whether your dog has a heart condition, liver condition, or they're a little old senior, we'd recommend adding turmeric into their diet as it's been proven to help heart and liver health! (Disclaimer: Always consult with their vet beforehand!)
3. It can help to prevent cancer
Multiple studies have been done with turmeric... Amazingly, it's been found to help prevent cancer in dogs. Chronic inflammation can lead to cancer, and as we discussed, the anti-inflammatory properties help to relieve some of that inflammation. Turmeric is a very powerful antioxidant that has been shown to kill cancer cells and prevent more of them from growing in your dog's body. The curcumin from the turmeric could help to stop the precancerous changes from actually becoming cancer... It's truly incredible!
